Andy Reid says Eagles never bothered to interview Eric Bieniemy

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid says that the Philadelphia Eagles never considered Eric Bieniemy.

Ahead of the big game this weekend, coaching staffs all over the NFL are being rounded out. The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, a guy most thought would be the first candidate off the board, has yet to be hired.

Bieniemy joined the Kansas City coaching staff in 2013 as a running backs coach after spending the 2011-12 season as offensive coordinator of the Colorado Buffaloes. He transitioned into the offensive coordinator role for the Chiefs in 2018 and has become popular most notably for their offense that produced a Super Bowl last season that they’re set to defend in this one.

For several weeks rumors surrounding which team would win the Bieniemy sweepstakes but when the offseason arrived for the teams in need of new leadership, the phone wasn’t ringing as anticipated.

Despite being interviewed by the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans basically campaigning for his hiring, Bieniemy is still on the market. Both Doug Pederson and Matt Nagy, who were in the position before Bieniemy, now have head-coaching jobs in the league.

The Philadelphia Eagles never interviewed Eric Bieniemy

Just a week after Bieniemy gave this incredible quote on the hiring process, it comes out that the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t even interview him. The Eagles, who were in need of a new coach to figure out their tumultuous quarterback situation, instead landed on Nick Sirianni.

Seven head-coaching jobs were up for grabs this offseason so to see Bieniemy walk away without one is definitely interesting. He’ll have his hands full this weekend planning for a Tampa Bay defense that just probably ended Drew Brees’s career.

It seems as though Bieniemy will be returning to the Chiefs next season but we’ll see if the NFL offseason has any more coaching surprises.
