Alabama football: DeVonta Smith, Tua Tagovailoa hoping for Crimson Tide reunion on Dolphins

Alabama football stars DeVonta Smith and Tua Tagovailoa could be Miami Dolphins teammates.

After being part of the same Alabama football recruiting class, there is a strong possibility 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith could reunite with his former Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the Miami Dolphins.

Smith said the following on the NFL Network about a possible Alabama reunion in Miami, “We have talked about how it would be nice to run it back again.” The Dolphins have two first-round picks, including No. 3 overall by way of the Laremy Tunsil trade with the Houston Texans. Could Smith be the first non-quarterback be taken off the board in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft?

Smith and Tagovailoa could second-and-26 the AFC East to death

There exists little doubt about the chemistry Smith and Tagovailoa developed in their three years together in Tuscaloosa. While Tagovailoa went No. 5 overall to the Dolphins last year, Smith could go as high as No. 3 to the Dolphins, but will not fall out of the top 10 by any stretch of the imagination. He would be a terrific pickup for the ‘Phins if they do believe in Tagovailoa long-term.

Miami nearly made the AFC playoffs last year, albeit in an expanded field. The biggest issues with last year’s Dolphins team was what they were getting week-to-week at the quarterback position, quite literally. Some weeks, it would be veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. Though he played better than Tagovailoa, the rookie southpaw was forced in there and somewhat held his own.

Ultimately, there may be more pressing roster issues than reaching for a luxury item like wide receiver at No. 3. However, Smith is the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard did it back in 1991 at Michigan. Frankly, Miami taken Smith at No. 3 would not be scrutinized as intently as the Dolphins would if they took the third best quarterback in 2021.

A reunion between Smith and Tagovailoa in Miami is too intriguing for it not to become a reality.
