Which is focused on self-defense.
Born A Champion is written by and starring real-life Brazilian Ju-Jitsu black belt Sean Patrick Flanery with appearances by current UFC featherweight Edson Barboza. This film is a love letter to the early days of MMA and those fans who spent hours on message boards and forums looking for the next great fighter and ripping grainy fight footage for their personal collections.
The film follows Mickey, played by Flanery, a middle-aged BJJ blackbelt with a moral code and his struggle to navigate through a world where Mixed Martial Arts are booming in popularity, and people are paying huge sums of money for people to participate in tournaments around the world.
Embattled follows a more modern MMA story as lightweight and welterweight WFA champion Cash Boykins (think Conor McGregor with a southern accent) has the opportunity to rebuild a relationship with his 18-year-old son Jett, played by Jared Mann, with whom he has not had a relationship with, in many years.
A film for the more mature MMA fans among us as it grapples with themes of substance abuse, and toxic masculinity, which has plagued all levels of MMA since its rise in popularity nearly 30 years ago.
